This web site provides much in the way of information to birding in Western New York, but provides little in regard to pretty pictures, identification tips, or lists of links to other sites (this is because pictures and ID help are general topics that can be found elsewhere). The mission of this site is to provide information to visiting and novice birders about birding in Western New York. It features an extensive site guide, an annotated checklist of where to locate specific birds, and site recommendations to the Rochester and Buffalo area based upon the season. Additional information is provided to round out the birding in Western New York. In this context, Western New York includes all the areas west of the larger Finger Lakes. Major geographic features that affect birding include Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River, the Genesee River Valley and the western portions of parts of the Allegany plateau.

It is also the most comprehensive listing of birding locations described at this web site. If you are new to birding and wish to find sites locally, or are a visiting birder with limited traveling restrictions, the County list may be the most useful. If you are a NYS birder and are familiar with the Kingbird regions and wish to remain in a specific region, the Kingbird Region list is most appropriate.Site recommendations to the Rochester and Buffalo area are just that. For each species listed, it describes where they can be found locally, including links (if they exist) to site descriptions. Breeding Bird Atlas 2000 is a worthy project in need of your help. Rare Birds cites information about reporting rare birds, the local birding hotline phone numbers, and what information to record when reporting rare birds.
