Western New York Birding Site Guide

In the context of this web site, Western New York includes all the areas west of the larger Finger Lakes. Major geographic features that affect birding include Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River, the Genesee River Valley and the western portions of parts of the Allegany plateau. A clickable, interactive map does not yet work and is under construction.

There are really three dimensions which make up a complete bird-finding guide: locations, birds, and time of the year. Most printed bird-finding guides focus on the locations. The Birding Western New York's primary focus is the locations dimension as well. Sites are described below, but specifics on where to find local birds and the site recommendations to the Rochester and Buffalo area at a certain time of year are available as well.

Please use the links provided below in the list of sites described by:

If you listen to the hotline or read an email posting, and do not know where a site is, the Alphabetical order list might be of most use. It is also the most comprehensive listing. If you are new to birding and wish to find sites locally, or are a visiting birder with limited travelling restrictions, or are pursuing a "County List" in association with the FNYSBC, the county list may be the most useful. If you are a NYS birder and are familiar with the Kingbird regions and wish to remain in a specific region, the Kingbird Region list is most appropriate.

State Resources Online

Links from any one of the following sites may describe the above public locations. Despite being from the state, they are often useful. I recommend trying them for further detail.
