Detection Systems Pond
High Acres Landfill
Site history/background
The Detection Systems Pond is a recently discovered site to look at gulls during winter. The gulls rest/roost on this pond. (You can also find some in the local fields). The gulls feed at a nearby open landfill (High Acres Landfill). As such, the gulls are much more numerous Mon-Fri and Sat morning (open hours of the landfill). Ring-billed, Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls are usually around. During the winter, it's not unusual to find Iceland or Glaucous or Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Thayer's have been recorded there as well as the region's first California Gull. Gulls are visible at the High Acres Landfill as well. Directions to the landfill: follow the gulls.Directions
A map that accompanies the following directions is located here (39KB).
The Detection Systems Pond is behind Detection Systems on Perinton Parkway. To get there, travel I-490 east to NYS Route 31F. Follow NYS Route 31F east out of Fairport. Perinton Parkway is a little over 2 miles past Turk Hill Road, on the right. The first road left off Perinton Parkway leads to the Detection Systems parking lot. Note: the entire pond can not be viewed from the lot.

Site history/background
The Tetlow clan regularly birded these farm ponds during the 1970s and 1980s. The farm ponds on Wakeman Road have held an unusual assortment of birds, especially spring shorebirds as the farm pond usually dries up in the summer. The region's first Black-necked Stilt was found here. Many of the commoner species, plus Willet, Wilson's and Red-necked Phalarope have been located here. Ducks, geese and coot also use these ponds, and those just to the east on both sides of NYS Route 31F. Gulls also hang around in this area due to the landfill.Directions
The farm pond is on the Northeast corner of NYS Route 31F and Wakeman Road. To get there, travel I-490 east to NYS Route 31F. Proceed east on NYS Route 31F past Perinton Parkway. Wakeman Road is the first left past the subdivision.
