NYS Regional Weather Trends

NYS Weather

New York State borders Canada, which ought to indicate how far north New York resides. Major weather influences are cold fronts coming out of the Canadian arctic, tropical storms along the coast and the gambler's effect of the Great Lakes.

If you are wondering if you are going to be rained/snowed on out in the field, or if you are wondering if those weather gurus are forecasting southwest spring migration winds (or northwest fall winds), check out the forecast nearest you.

Western NY Weather

Almost every place in the ABA region has laid claim to the statement of "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes, it'll change." Nowhere have I found this to be more true than in Western NY. Not only is Western NY subject to the strange weather patterns that everybody else is subject to, but Western NY has the additional factor of, not one but, two Great Lakes. No matter the direction of the weather, it is bound to be influenced by either Lake Ontario or Lake Erie. (The exception is Nor'easters which, by their very nature, blow in particularly unusual weather ... and, perhaps, coastal vagrants). This is particularly true in winter when fronts passing over the water often pick up moisture and drop the resultant snow across the region. Typical snow belts occur just south of Buffalo, from Lake Erie, although shifts in the jet stream can adjust the impact in almost any part of the region. What city has more rain than Seattle, more wind than Chicago, and is known for its severe winters of blizzard conditions? Yes, Buffalo.
